5 Questions for Galen Carroll, Modesto’s Police Chief:
What is the biggest goal you aim to accomplish as the Police Chief?
Our primary goal at the police department is to improve the quality of life in our city. Making Modesto Better means having a city we are proud to call home, the City of Great Neighbors. It means striving to improve – as an agency and a city. In order to work towards making Modesto better, the police department is organized around three goals: Reduce crime and the fear of crime, Increase community engagement, and Promote organizational excellence.
What is one thing the average citizen of Modesto might not know about the role of Police Chief?
Being the Chief is much like running a business. I get to wear a uniform every day, while making decisions about the future of the department, managing our budget, and working toward a happy and fulfilled workforce and community.
If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, whose would they be, and why?
There are so many things I would like to try or experience, so this is a very hard question. It would be easy to say someone famous – like a singer or an athlete – but I think it would be a blast to spend a day as a heavy equipment operator, for a bulldozer, backhoe, or the like. Perhaps I never really grew up, but it looks like fun.
If you had to eat one thing for every meal going forward, what would you eat?
Hands down, pizza! My waistline has already suffered for it, and would suffer more, but there is no such thing as bad pizza, some is just better than others.
What motivates you most to get out of bed each morning?
My back doesn’t appreciate sleeping in quite as much I do, so that’s a motivating factor. On a serious note, making a difference in the lives of people around me, and helping others, motivates me to get out of bed.
