The City of Modesto, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau and Modesto’s Local Organizing Committee
are committed to exceeding expectations for the 2014 Amgen Tour of California. We have the same
infrastructure in place to perform as a top-notch host city as we did when hosting the Amgen Tour of
California in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Modesto pledges to provide whatever support is necessary
to have the honor of hosting the 2014 Amgen Tour of California – our #1 goal is always to take
care of your every need.
Here are just a few reasons why Modesto is an ideal host city for the Amgen Tour of California...
The one thing that makes Modesto different than every other city in the United States, or the world
for that matter, is “American Graffiti.” As the subject of George Lucas’s
milestone film, Modesto is the one true home of the Graffiti Cruise that began in the late 1940s
and ‘50s with a spirit that lives on today. The characters and the places in the film
were all drawn from George Lucas’s childhood in Modesto. The spirit of “American
Graffiti” embraces our small town charm, rich food industry, talented local music scene,
community events like MoBand, and the family values that embody the idea of Modesto being the heart
The crown jewel of Modesto is the Virginia Corridor
Trail. The trail is now more than 2 miles in overall length and provides a
north-south bicycle and pedestrian corridor from Downtown Modesto north to Bowen Avenue.
In addition to the traditional trail amenities, this trail features an overcrossing at Briggsmore
Avenue that provides bicyclists and pedestrians with a safe way to cross this major east-west
expressway. Construction is expected to begin in late 2013 on Phase 6 which will extend the trail north an additional .75 miles and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2014.
The City of Modesto is continuing in its effort to be a Bicycle Friendly Community.
Cyclists in Modesto are provided safe accommodations for cycling and are encouraged to bike for transportation and
recreation. It has been proven that simple steps to make bicycling safe and comfortable pay
dividends in civic, community and economic development. Modesto
continues to make investments in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure
and pro-bicycling policies – all of which are important components of Modesto’s cycling
community now and in planning for the future.
In addition to the support from the entire community, Modesto is perfectly placed at the center of
California, making it the ideal host city to bisect California whether north-south or east-west,
or hosting a time trial. Riding into or out of Modesto, or a route within the City during a
time trial, would be an exciting adventure, enhanced by either coming through the Gold Country,
over Mt. Hamilton, or through our fertile fields and farmland in a heart-pounding sprint for the
finish. As a host city, Modesto can add a wide variety of unique challenges and scenery
unmatched by the rest of California.
