Modesto’s perfect placement in the center of California makes it an ideal host city regardless of the
direction the Tour is heading. With a long-standing history of performance, hospitality and
flexibility – Modesto stands ready to be a part of the 2014 Amgen Tour of California. A few route
options are provided below for consideration; however, Modesto’s proposal to be a host city is not limited.
Start: San Jose
Once synonymous with the Amgen Tour of California, this route provides dramatic climbs, twists and turns, and fast,
flat roads which create an exciting race for the finish through the streets of Modesto. Once called an “epic stage” –
this is sure to be a cyclist and spectator favorite.
What better way to showcase central California than to start at the Endurance Capital of the World and end in the
cornucopia that feeds the world. Rich agricultural land and beautiful scenery fill this mostly flat sprinters stage.
Perhaps the most fitting for a race in the “Golden State” would be a Gold Country route. California’s Gold Country
offers a picturesque route with elevation changes unmatched in other areas of the state. With Sonora’s success
in 2012 and Modesto’s strong track record as a host city – the 2014 Amgen Tour of California would be sure to have
a well-organized and beautiful stage of the race.
Each year Modesto has had the opportunity to host the Amgen Tour of California, the intersection of 12th and
I Streets in Downtown Modesto has been selected as the Start and/or Finish Line with the section of I Street
between 10th and 11th being the location for the Lifestyle Festival. This area is the perfect width and is
located in close proximity to just about everything needed to accommodate the Tour. It is highly recommended
that this area be considered again as the Start/Finish Line and Lifestyle Festival location. However, Modesto
also has several other locations available that can also accommodate the Amgen Tour of California and are
willing to explore those further with Tour staff.
