Kaiser Permanente Announced as Local Presenting Sponsor
for the Modesto Stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California
The City of Modesto is pleased to announce that Kaiser Permanente has agreed to become the local presenting sponsor for the Stage 3 start of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California when it rolls through Modesto on February 20, 2008. The Amgen Tour of California has already become one of the nation's largest and most recognized cycling events with more than 120 world class athletes competing for the nation's largest cash prize in cycling.
The local organizing committee for the event has been charged with raising $50,000 to cover a host community's costs.
"We are honored to have Kaiser Permanente as the first local sponsor named for the Modesto stage of the Amgen Tour of California," said Mayor Jim Ridenour.
"Their investment guarantees that our community will be able to host a first class event."
Kaiser Permanente will introduce inpatient services to Modesto upon the
opening of its new hospital in October 2008.
"This is a great opportunity for our community to demonstrate its 'can do' spirit by supporting and hosting a race that attracts world-wide attention and encourages healthy activity," said Corwin Harper, Senior Vice President/Area Manager in the Central Valley for Kaiser Permanente. "We look forward to partnering with the city and others to make this an event that creates a lasting positive impression of our community."
After a February 17 start in Palo Alto/Stanford,
the Amgen Tour of California will arrive in Modesto on February 20 with an entourage of over 1,000 and will receive coverage from over 400 credentialed media; last year the race was viewed in 40 countries worldwide. The City of Modesto has been chosen to host the Stage 3 start of this event giving the community an opportunity to show the world what Modesto and its citizens have to offer.
The Amgen Tour of California is an eight-day stage race that begins in northern California and ends on February 24 in Pasadena. For more information on the race, please visit our website at
