Crimes Against Persons Unit

Crimes Against Persons is a unit within the Investigative Services Division which investigates felony assaults, robberies, homicides, death investigations, possession of dangerous weapons, runaway and missing persons cases occurring within the City of Modesto.

The primary duty of Crimes Against Persons personnel is to conduct competent follow-up investigation on the all cases assigned in a professional manner. Investigations are conducted following the appropriate policies and procedures as set forth in the Modesto Police Department’s General Orders, and within the parameters of local, State and Federal laws. Many of the cases handled by Crimes Against Persons personnel are high profile and are scrutinized closely by the public and press. This requires that the investigator to be highly qualified, competent, professional and motivated to handle the investigation appropriately and in a timely manner. The investigator must be able to work with a variety of people in very trying circumstances and still be able to maintain a professional demeanor. Many cases involve many hours of investigative time, especially when a homicide first occurs and the initial investigation may require the investigator to work 24 to 36 hours straight. For this reason Crimes Against Persons detectives are on call 24 hours, 365 days a year.

Crimes Against Persons personnel are committed to provide professional police services to the community. They make presentations to community groups and financial institutions regarding the prevention and reporting of robberies.
