Individuals can now nominate themselves or others to be a Breakaway from Cancer® Champion. Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer initiative aims to raise awareness of important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention through survivorship.
There are nearly 12 million cancer survivors in the United States today and more than 1.5 million Americans will be diagnosed this year alone. Similar to the support team that helps a cyclist breakaway from the peloton, it takes a strong support network to help a person break away from cancer.
Five individuals – one from each of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California communities of Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, Modesto, Paso Robles, and the Conejo Valley (Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, and Agoura Hills) – who have made a positive impact and acted as an inspiration to those affected by cancer within their community will be selected as the Breakaway from Cancer Champions. Nominations will be accepted through March 22.
The Modesto Breakaway from Cancer Champion will be granted special access to the 2011 Amgen Tour of California Stage 3 Finish, award a jersey to a professional cyclist, be recognized on stage, and lead the Breakaway Mile through Modesto. Sponsored by Amgen, the Breakaway Mile takes place at the finish line of the Amgen Tour of California to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide.
