Federal Funding Aids in Clean-Up of Abandoned Homes in Newly Annexed Modesto Neighborhood

The City of Modesto’s Community & Economic Development Department (Building Safety & Neighborhood Preservation Division) and the Parks, Recreation & Neighborhoods Department coordinated the demoltion of six fire damaged single-family dwellings in the Shackelford Elementary School neighborhood.  In addition to the demolition of the six properties, all fire debris, trash and other items illegally dumped on the properties were cleared away.

These abandoned dwellings had become unsecured, including several that had become inhabited illegally by squatters.  All had been damaged by fire.  Following complaints from the neighborhood, the Building Safety & Neighborhood Preservation Division identified these six properties as unsafe and a public nuisance.  Following the abatement process of sending Notice and Orders to any lien holders, beneficiaries and the owners of these properties and holding Administrative Hearings, the Building Safety & Neighborhood Preservation Division proceeded with the clean-up and demolition of these properties.  This work was funded by the Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood’s Federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP3) monies which were allocated to the City to remove blight from low-income neighborhoods.

The City of Modesto annexed this area in June 2012, and is committed to providing blight abatement and other comprehensive services to all Modesto neighborhoods.
