Modesto CA: Early morning traffic collision results in pedestrian fatality
On Sunday January 6, 2013 at approximately 4:00 AM a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Scenic Drive. The pedestrian was crossing Scenic Drive southbound just west of the intersection with Coffee Road when he was struck by a vehicle driving westbound on Scenic Drive. The vehicle was a 1996 Toyota Camry.
The pedestrian was transported to Doctor Medical Center with major injuries to his head and torso. He later passed away due to the injuries he sustained. The pedestrian’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family members. He was a 64 year old Modesto resident. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the collision, called for emergency assistance, and is cooperating with the investigation. Neither alcohol nor drug use by the driver of the vehicle appear to be a factor in the collision.
As a standard practice in a fatal vehicle collision, the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit has initiated a comprehensive collision investigation. Weather conditions are being considered as part of this investigation; however no conclusion has been reached if these conditions even played a factor in the collision. This investigation is in the early stages and witness statements as well as physical evidence is being thoroughly evaluated before any collision factor or cause will be determined.
Westbound traffic on Scenic Drive was diverted from approximately 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM while the scene of the collision was processed for evidence.
This is the second major traffic collision in the past four days. On Wednesday January 2, 2013 at 5:47 PM an 83 year old male pedestrian suffered a broken back, broken pelvis, broken leg, and internal injuries resulting from a collision with a vehicle. The pedestrian was struck on Floyd Avenue and Mac Gregor Court. He was crossing southbound in the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection of Floyd Ave and Mac Gregor Court. The pedestrian is recovering from his injuries and is expected to survive.
