Citizen Helps Police Capture Four Residential Burglars

On Friday, September 13 2013, at 2:30 p.m. Modesto Police Officers responded to the 3900 block of Drakeshire Dr. to investigate a residential burglary. According to an alert citizen, one suspect was dropped off in front of his neighbor’s residence by three other males in a white, older model, sport utility vehicle. The citizen observed the male looking into his neighbor’s windows and trying to open the front door. The witness then observed the male jump the fence into his neighbor’s backyard, so he called police.

The witness continued to monitor the suspects while updating police over the phone. He provided physical and clothing descriptions of the suspects as they removed property from the residence. The witness observed the suspects as they loaded the stolen property in the S.U.V. and provided a direction of travel when they drove away.

Officers responded to the area and began looking for the suspect vehicle. Sergeant Tyler located the S.U.V. in the 1500 block of Mable Ave near Stockard Coffee Elementary School. The driver of the suspect vehicle got out and began walking away southbound on Northview Dr. towards the elementary school. The three other suspects remained in the vehicle. As a precaution officers requested that Stockard Coffee Elementary School and Fred C. Beyer High School be placed on lock down.

The suspect started running on Northview Dr. until he reached Beyer High School. He then jumped the fence into the baseball field and continued walking towards the school buildings. Officers surrounded the school and an officer ordered the suspect to surrender over his police car’s public announcement system. Having no avenue of escape the suspect complied and he was taken into custody without further incident.  Once all four suspects were arrested the schools were notified.

Property from the burglary was located inside the suspect vehicle. The property owner responded and took possession of the stolen items.

The driver of the suspect vehicle was identified as George Dancer 33 years. Dancer was arrested for burglary, conspiracy and resisting/delaying arrest. The three other suspects were identified as Allen Berry 37 years, Zachary Alarcon 25 years and Andrew Ketner 18 years. All three were arrested for burglary and conspiracy.

It is important to recognize that these individuals were captured with the help of a watchful neighbor. He was familiar with his neighborhood and noticed suspicious activity. He called police immediately and became a good witness by providing detailed descriptions which allowed responding officers to locate the suspects. This is a great example of how members of the community and the police department can work together to fight crime.

The Modesto Police Department encourages neighborhoods to start Neighborhood Watch Programs. The program helps bring citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer. Citizens take an active role by getting to know their neighbors and reporting suspicious activity. Citizens who are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch Program can contact the Modesto Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit. They can also visit the Modesto Police Department’s website for more information.

Police ask anyone who may have information regarding criminal activity to please call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.  Tipsters can also text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a text message to 274637.
