Modesto Awarded Grant from the COPS Hiring Program
Modesto, CA – The U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), announced Modesto as one of the recipients of this year’s grant.
The City of Modesto was awarded approximately $1,000,000 to fill eight School Resource Officer positions. Modesto Police Department currently has four of the eight positions filled at high schools within the City. The remaining four positions will be funded by the awarded grant. With these eight positions filled, there will be an officer assigned to each of the seven comprehensive high schools and the one continuation high school. Final approval will be determined by the Modesto City Council.
The COPS Hiring Program offers grants to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire community policing officers. The program provides salaries and benefits for officers and deputy hires for three years. Grantees for the 2013 hiring program were selected based on their fiscal needs, local crime rates, and community policing plans.
