Modesto, CA – You may soon see a slight change in the uniform of the men and women of the Modesto Police Department. Starting May 15th, Modesto Police officers will be sporting a new badge. This new 7-point star badge is a modern replica of the first Modesto Police badge worn by officers in the late-1800’s to early 1900’s.

Since Chief Galen Carroll arrived in Modesto in 2013, the Department has continued to progress and evolve by implementing new technology and innovative crime-fighting initiatives. At the same time, the Department has refocused on the importance of community partnerships by re-implementing Area Command Policing and making officers, supervisors and managers more accountable for addressing neighborhood problems.

“With recent internal changes, along with the challenges of reduced budgets and staffing, it is essential for our men and women to never lose focus of the Department’s core fundamental reason for its existence; and that is providing professional and quality service to our community,” said Chief Galen Carroll. “I believe the change in our badge will be a true reminder to our current and future officers of why the Department was created and why we continue to exist today.”

In 1884, the first City Marshall was sworn in to serve the city of Modesto, which then had a population of 2,500. The first police officers to serve the city, wore silver star-shaped badges similar to the one pictured below. Sometime during the 1920’s, Modesto Police officers transitioned to the gold-colored eagle top shield badge, which continues to be worn by officers today.

In the law enforcement community, a police badge has significant meaning. It is a symbol of honor, integrity, public trust and justice. Officers wearing the badge are reaffirming their oath to uphold the law and to protect and serve all those who live, work and visit the city of Modesto.

This switch of the badge will be one way to honor the Department’s history and traditions as we define our culture for the future.

To fund the new badges, the police department has offered police personnel the option of purchasing their own badge which will be made of a higher quality silver and display the employee’s name and hire date on the back. Employees will also have the opportunity to purchase their old badge as keepsakes.
