BURGLARY SUSPECT IDENTIFIED

BURGLARY SUSPECT IDENTIFIED

Modesto, CA – An off-duty Modesto Police officer shot and wounded an armed burglary suspect Sunday night.  Police have released the suspect’s identity.

At about 4:50 pm on Sunday, Modesto Police dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible burglary in progress at aNortheast Modesto home.  Preliminary information seems to suggest that the off-duty officer confronted an armed male suspect on the side yard of the neighboring property.  Police believe the burglar, 24-year-old Modesto resident Glen Dean Carey, was armed with a firearm stolen from the home at the time of the encounter.

Carey was shot twice and he sustained what are believed to be non-life threatening wounds to his upper body.  Patrol officers arrived and took the man into custody moments later.  Carey was transported to a local hospital where he remains under armed guard on residential burglary charges.  Other charges are possible as the investigation progresses and detectives cannot eliminate the possibility of additional arrests.

Investigators with the Modesto Police Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation.   Due to safety concerns for the involved officer and his family, he will only be identified as a 27 year veteran of the Modesto Police Department.
