Modesto, CA- Modesto Police Investigators continue to follow-up on yesterday’s officer-involved shooting.  Although the investigation is ongoing, more details have emerged regarding the events leading up to the shooting.

On Tuesday May 24th, just after 10:00 p.m., Modesto Police officers were dispatched to a reported robbery that had just occurred at the Fast Mart, located at 3955 Coffee Road, in northeast Modesto.  An employee reported a male suspect had accosted him during closing hours.  The suspect, who has been identified as Jeremy Dee Atkinson, a 38-year-old Modesto resident, used a firearm to hold-up the store.  The firearm was a rifle that had been modified to make the length shorter.  Atkinson pointed the firearm at the clerk’s head and demanded money.  Once the clerk gave Atkinson an undisclosed amount of currency, Atkinson fled on foot towards a nearby residential neighborhood, west of the business.

As patrol officers arrived and began to canvas the nearby residential neighborhood, several witnesses reported seeing Atkinson running through the area.  Officers followed the direction of Atkinson’s path and located him in the 3900 block of Dragoo Park Drive.

When officers approached Atkinson he began to run southbound on Dragoo Park Drive.  Atkinson reached into his front waistband area and continued to fail to comply with the officer’s demands to surrender.  One officer discharged his firearm and shot Atkinson.  Atkinson was taken into custody and provided medical aid, however, arriving paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The loaded firearm Atkinson used during the robbery and property from the store has been recovered.

Investigators have discovered Atkinson had been involved in a recent crime spree that started in February 2011.  Detectives have linked Atkinson to at least 5 separate violent robberies in Modesto, wherein Atkinson used a firearm.

Atkinson had an extensive criminal history and was currently wanted on two separate felony warrants, one out of Modesto and the other from Merced.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after officers are involved in a shooting incident.

Three separate and independent investigations are currently under way regarding this incident.  The Modesto Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into the robbery and shooting, Stanislaus County District Attorney’s office is conducting an independent criminal review of the incident, and the Modesto Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.  No officers were injured during this incident.

Modesto Police Detectives ask anyone with information related to this incident to contact Detective Rick House at 209-342-6198.
