Modesto, CA- Police are investigating an attempted burglary where the victim detained the suspect until police arrived.

Just after 6:00 AM this morning, the owner of a business in the 3500 block of McHenry Av called police saying he had a suspect detained who had attempted to break into his business.

Officers arrived at the scene to learn the victim was notified by his alarm company of an alarm activation at his business.  When he responded to determine what caused the alarm to activate, he found the inside lights off and a male standing near the doorway leading into his business.  As the victim approached, the suspect ran toward the rear of the business, leaving behind a 2X4. The victim grabbed the 2X4 and chased after the suspect, corralling him behind the building.  The suspect pulled out two screwdrivers during the altercation and attempted to injure the victim.  Using the 2X4 he grabbed, the victim struck the suspect and was able to detain him until police arrived.

The suspect has been identified as Ildefonso Herrera, 32-years-old, of Patterson.  Officers located methamphetamine on Herrera, as well as stolen checks, mail and false ID’s, which he dropped during the altercation.  Herrera was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for possession of a controlled substance, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of forged identification.
