Modesto CA: Solo vehicle collision causes fatality on West Briggsmore Avenue.
On Monday December 23rd, 2013 at approximately 9:48 PM a 2004 Pontiac GTO was traveling Eastbound on West Briggsmore Avenue just East of Prescott Road. The vehicle lost control and collided with the retaining wall on the south side of the roadway.
The driver is believed to have been ejected from the vehicle and he sustained life threatening injuries. Despite being immediately transported to a local hospital, he did not survive due to the injures received from the collision.
This particular section of West Briggsmore Ave runs Eastbound and curves noticeably to the South at the location where the collision occurred. The area is bordered by retaining walls to the North and South of the roadway throughout the curve.
Several witnesses to events just prior to the collision indicate the vehicle may have been engaged in racing with another vehicle. The other vehicle is described as a white or silver BMW sedan. This vehicle did not stop at the scene of the collision, however it is unknown if the other vehicle was aware of the collision. Officers are reviewing potential sources of video surveillance which may have captured the incident on video. Anyone who was involved in the events prior to the collision or may have been a witness is encouraged to contact the police department and provide a description of the events.
At this time, it is unknown if the diver was wearing his seatbelt. Alcohol usage does not appear to be a factor in this collision. The male driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family members. He is a 36 year old Modesto resident.
As standard protocol in a fatal vehicle collision, the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit has initiated a comprehensive collision investigation. The cause of this collision is still under investigation as traffic investigators are still locating potential witnesses and assessing evidence located at the scene of the collision.
