The Mayor’s Top Teens program is an ongoing community collaboration that recognizes and celebrates teenagers. Its mission is to create a change in the community’s perception of teens by promoting a more positive image of our youth. The programs goals are to:
- recognize a diverse group of high school teens who may not normally receive recognition
- send a strong message to teenagers that they are valued in the community
- collaborate with youth-serving organizations and businesses that advocate for and serve youth
- provide an opportunity for teens to participate in community service projects
"This program recognizes youth who have overcome obstacles and yet have maintained academic excellence,” said Mayor Marsh. “I am enthusiastically continuing this program as part of the Council’s commitment to champion education partnerships as well as to recognize the accomplishments of these amazing top teens!"
In the 3rd year of the program, over 50 teens were nominated by their guidance counselors, teachers, mentors, coaches and peers. Of these 50 nominees, 35 were selected to participate and receive awards. All award recipients will have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving others, overcome adversity or a unique obstacle in his/her life; achieved a significant accomplishment; and served as a positive role model for their peers. The 35 will be named the 2013/2014 Mayor’s Top Teens. In addition, a “Top 7” group has been selected for special honors and will be recognized for their outstanding achievements.
Sponsors of this program are also being sought – if interested in making a difference in a teenager’s life or interested in additional information, view the Top Teens Webpage or call Loree Lee at (209) 577-5331.
