City Partners with Habitat for Humanity on Hahn Lift Station Project

The City of Modesto is partnering with Habitat for Humanity on a property demolition project.  As the City’s 2007 Wastewater Collection System Master Plan identified the need to replace the Hahn Lift Station located on the southeast corner of Nightingale Drive and Honey Creek Road, the City acquired a bank-owned residence on Nightingale Drive and will relocate the existing lift station to this site.

“The City of Modesto is pleased to be able to partner with Habitat for Humanity to salvage materials that otherwise probably would have ended up in the landfill.” said Rich Ulm, Deputy Director of the Utilities Planning and Projects Department.  “This is a win-win situation.”

Habitat for Humanity will remove items from the residence on Monday, November 16, prior to demolition for use either on future projects or to be sold at their Restore Home Improvement Outlet on Kearney Avenue.  Once the items have been removed, preparation work for the demolition of the residence will begin.  After demolition, grass and sprinklers will be installed at the site until the new lift station is constructed.

“The partnership with the City of Modesto will benefit Habitat for Humanity by providing usable materials for our homes,” said Gary Torrijos, Habitat for Humanity, Stanislaus County, ReStore Manager.  “This is a wonderful opportunity and we hope there are more to come in the future.”

All wastewater (sewage) must flow through the collection system to the treatment plan and this is typically accomplished through gravity flow.  However, if a neighborhood is located at a lower elevation than the nearest collection system connection, the wastewater must then be pumped “up hill,” via lift stations.

Demolition is set to begin on November 23.  Area residents can expect minimal interruption during the demolition process; truck traffic and noise is expected on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Work is expected to be completed by the end of November.
