Volunteer Opportunities Still Available for Modesto Stage of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California

Want to get involved in America’s largest cycling event?  Here's your opportunity! Volunteers are still needed for the Stage 3 Finish in Modesto on Tuesday, May 17.

Anyone who wishes to volunteer for an opportunity to participate in the sixth-annual cycling race can sign-up online for positions including volunteer course marshals, security, and volunteer check-in.  Simply go online to www.modestogov.com/amgen and click on “Volunteer” under the “Get Involved” tab.

Modesto is known for its volunteerism – and this event is no different.  More than 400 volunteers came out in force last year – making Modesto an amazing stage and showcasing the intense community pride Modestans have in their city.  The same number of volunteers are needed again this year and you can help continue Modesto's tradition of being one of the best host city's for the Amgen Tour of California!

The majority of volunteers are needed as volunteer course marshals, providing support for the 75 professional course marshals that travel with the tour and support the local law enforcement authorities in each host city.  Course marshal volunteers have an opportunity to be on the race route, close the cyclists, with responsibility for monitoring pedestrian traffic, barricades and road closures.

Volunteer positions for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California include:

Course Marshals – Course Marshals are assigned a designated area along the race course to assist with the coordination and safety of the field of play for all race venues.  Course Marshals will assist with keeping the course clear of pedestrians, spectators, cars, etc., and will keep spectators informed as the race is in progress.  Course Marshal positions are for local stages only; traveling Course Marshals are not being recruited at this time.

Security – Security volunteers will assist Tour Security Staff with access-control, including on-course, hospitality, awards, green room and press conference (special Security t-shirt will be provided).

Volunteer Check-in – Check-in volunteers will assist the Local Volunteer Coordinator with set-up, check-in/registration and deployment of volunteers.

Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or accompanied by an adult.

Attendance at the Volunteer Orientation is highly recommended as this is where duties and day-of logistics are discussed.  The Volunteer Orientation will be held on Tuesday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Arbor Theatre of the Modesto Centre Plaza which is located at 10th and K Streets.
