The City of Modesto announces the recent renovation of three (3) playgrounds in neighborhood parks. Replacement of the three playgrounds was completed recently and all play areas will be open for use by Easter weekend. Accessibility to play equipment in Sipherd, Mellis and Cesar Chavez parks was improved by replacing old, non-ADA compliant play equipment and surfacing with play equipment that now conforms to ADA Guidelines for accessibility. In addition, ramps into the play areas that meet accessibility guidelines were replaced or installed and new surfacing was installed in Sipherd and Mellis parks replacing the sand surfacing that had been in use.
While Cesar Chavez Park had engineered wood chips already, additional chips were installed to provide the proper depth required by the design of the new play equipment. The new engineered wood chip surfacing meets industry standards to reduce injuries from falls while also providing a surface accessible to children in wheel chairs. The play equipment, designed separately for youth between the ages of 2-5 and 5-12, provides multiple play opportunities that challenge users of all capabilities. Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds were used on this project to improve accessibility to these play areas.
