What is it exactly that makes a park, a park? Is it simply a plot of land with grass and a few trees? Or is a park something more? The role of the park has evolved from being a simple space with landscaping to a place where we can understand and relate to nature and experience social and cultural exchange.

A park is a place that is alive and teeming with physical activities, such as children playing and people skating, walking or jogging; cultural activities, such as concerts, movie nights and festivals; and social activities, such as picnics and family gatherings.

Parks provide open space and relief from housing and traffic congestion. They bring an element of the country into the city,

a valuable asset in an agricultural town that has fast become a large city.

Parks play an integrated role in making Modesto more inviting for living, working, and relaxing. We believe that our city can grow and prosper while preserving the natural beauty and distinctive community our park system provides.

Our parks contribute significantly to our quality of life. By integrating parks into the cultural lives of our neighborhoods, and by giving responsibility for maintenance, new programs, and even the design of our parks to the community, we will see the continued renewal, transformation, and revitalization of our city.
