Waste Tire Recycling Projects
The City of Modesto is one of the first communities in the state to install rubber sidewalks!
Rubber "tiles" are linked together in a framework to create a bouncy sidewalk that is easy on the knees!
The tiles are 2" thick and are made from 100% recycled waste tires. Approximately 10,000 SF of materials
were purchased and will be installed throughout the 2008/2009 fiscal year. The tiles can be removed to allow for root work
and then be reinstalled. Curious to try it for yourself? Take a stroll along Plaza Parkway or Jennie
Street. Rubber sidewalks may be coming to your neighborhood soon!

Several of Modesto's streets are covered with rubberized asphalt made from recycled waste tires and
there are many more to come! Rubberized asphalt is made from a mixture of oil and crumb rubber. It is
heated to approximately 420 degrees and applied to the surface. Hot rubber coated chips (small rocks)
are immediately applied and compressed into the mixture and then covered with a layer of slurry seal for
a long-lasting finished product. What a great way to recycle tires!

Pour in place groundcover is a soft protective surfacing made from recycled tires that is used in
playgrounds across America! Modesto has also installed it in some of its newest parks and park
renovations. The product is made from durable layers of colorful crumb rubber over a thick base of
recycled tire shreds that provide a soft protective surface for children. The base is derived from the
millions of recycled waste tires that are generated each year throughout the nation. The top coat of
colorful crumb rubber is made from new rubber. Creekwood Park is one of Modesto's first playgrounds to
have it installed!
