including: engineering services, tree maintenance, curbs and sidewalks, low cost water, wastewater storm drain and sewer
maintenance; airport, public transit, roundabouts and streets maintenance. The Department has a $103 million operating
budget with over 400 highly dedicated employees.
The mission of the Public Works Department is to design, construct, operate and maintain public infrastructure
efficiently and effectively in order to protect public safety and enhance the quality of community life. The Department
accomplishes these goals through the work of two groups.
Transportation focuses on moving people. The transportation group provides the residents
of Modesto greater freedom, access and opportunity through the Modesto City-County Airport, Public Transportation Systems,
Streets and Traffic Divisions and our Community Forestry (City Trees) division.
Utilities focuses on moving water. The utilities group provides dependable, low cost water,
wastewater, storm drain and sewer maintenance to the City of Modesto and surrounding communities.
