Measure S: Half-Cent Transportation Sales Tax
Better Roads – Safer Streets Program
In November, Stanislaus County voters may have the opportunity to vote on a half-cent sales tax. Money raised by the proposed
half-cent sales tax can only be spent on local transportation improvements. The proposed tax would automatically expire after
20 years – after raising approximately $700 million.
The following are Modesto-area projects proposed in the event of a half-cent sales tax dedicated to

Glossary of Terms: |
Slurry seal: a mixture of various materials such as: asphalt oil, rock, water and additives
aluminum sulfate, latex, etc.

Cape seal: a rock chip seal followed by a slurry seal which provides a more durable road surface
than a slurry seal alone.
|
Reconstruction: involves the addition of a lane or a significant change in the road.
|
Overlay: a new layer of asphalt over existing asphalt. It can protect and strengthen the existing pavement,
reduce the rate of deterioration and make the ride of the road smoother.
|
Surface patching/treatment: an interim repair using all-weather asphalt materials.
