5 Questions for Jaylen French, Modesto’s Director of Community & Economic Development:
What is the biggest goal you aim to accomplish as the Director of Community & Economic Development?
I have three primary goals: 1) to continue the revitalization of the downtown and to take it to the next level, 2) to create great places to live, work and play throughout the community, whether new development or redevelopment, and 3) to work with the City’s businesses to create a thriving economy, as well as attract new businesses and quality jobs that will compliment and diversify our economy.
What is one thing the average citizen of Modesto might not know about the role of Director of Community & Economic Development?
CED handles everything from the smallest code enforcement complaint to management of the SR-132 Highway construction project; from processing building permits for patios and pools to developing the 20+ year vision of the future of Modesto; from finding adequate shelter and services for the homeless to working with billion dollar companies.
What motivates you most to get out of bed each morning?
To make a difference. To improve and make things better: myself, my work, the community, the downtown, the city’s economy, the public’s trust...and many more.
If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with your extra time? Why?
Spend more time with family and friends, more traveling and hiking. Also read more and learn new things.
What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? Why?
Get involved. Contribute to help make a positive impact in the community. Too often we sit on the sidelines and complain, we can all be a part of the solution.
