Swim SMARTS
Safety, Movement, and Aquatic Readiness Training
We’re transitioning from our current swim lesson curriculum to our fresh, fun, and focused Swim SMARTS Program — short for Safety, Movement, and Aquatic Readiness Training for Swimmers. This new program helps swimmers build confidence, improve water safety, and develop strong swim skills with a modern and age-appropriate approach.
What’s New?
Our new curriculum follows a streamlined path with two learning tracks based on age and swim experience, plus advanced options for continued development:
Track A: Early Learners (Ages 6 months – 7 years)
Designed to introduce and build essential swim skills at an early age.
Track B: School Age Learners (Ages 8–17 years)
Perfect for beginners or developing swimmers new to swim lessons.
Track C: Advanced Combined Levels (Ages 8-17 years)
Once swimmers complete Track A6 or B3, they can level up with our Track C: Advanced Combined Levels, designed for skill mastery and swim team prep
Track E: Private Lessons (Ages 3+ years)
Prefer one-on-one instruction? Private Lessons are still available.
Why the Change?
We want every swimmer to succeed, feel safe, and grow their skills at their own pace. This updated program aligns with national safety standards, emphasizes life-saving techniques, and offers a clearer path for learning, with more opportunities for repetition and practice within each level.
Whether your child is just dipping their toes or swimming laps with ease, there’s a perfect place for them to grow in our new program.

Lifeguard Training Certification
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.
To enroll in the Lifeguarding course, you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session.
Prerequisite Skills
All lifeguarding participants must complete the required swimming skills prerequisite prior to taking the course. The prerequisite skills assessments include a swim-tread-swim and a timed event sequence including:
- Swim-tread-swim sequence: swim 150 yards – tread 2 minutes using only your legs – swim 50 yards. (during swim you should continuously demonstrate breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on your back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used during the swim.)
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed for this portion of the pre-test.
- Surface dive, feet-first, or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. Swimming underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
To participate in and complete this class, all participants must pass the prerequisite skills evaluation that will occur on the first day of the course, maintain the professional standards set by the American Red Cross and successfully complete the skills listed below.
Throughout the course, participants will learn and be evaluated on knowledge and skills related to lifeguarding, water rescues, extrications, CPR and AED and First Aid.
In addition, at the conclusion of the course, participants must successfully complete 3 final skills assessments and two final written examinations.
- Final Skill Assessment: Rotate in-conduct surveillance – rotate out
- Final Skill Assessment: Timed Single-rescuer CPR Scenario
- Final Skill Assessment: Multiple Rescuer Response Scenario
- Final Written Exam: 50-question Lifeguard exam and score a minimum of 80% on each.
- Final Written Exam: 75-question Title 22 exam and score a minimum of 80% on each.
Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding certification course will be issued one of the following certifications depending on the Lifeguarding course completed. For example, participants that successfully complete the Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, and First Aid for the Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) will be issued a certification valid for 2 years.
If you have a medical condition or disability that might prevent you from participating in the activities or have questions about being able to fully participate in the Lifeguarding course, please contact Aquatics Coordinator, Kelli Sargent to discuss this before the course begins.
