Trainee
The Police Officer Trainee position is the entry level class in the sworn Police Officer series. The classification is designed for candidates currently attending a California POST – certified Regular Basic Course academy (Intensive, Extended, or Modular formats) by time of appointment. This classification is distinguished from the Police Officer by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series since this class is typically used as work experience.
Hiring Incentives
Police Officer Trainee Hiring Incentive
Currently, the Police Officer Trainee Hiring Incentive is $5,000; paid $2,500 at the date of hire, and $2,500 would be paid upon completion of the Field Training Program. (A repayment schedule for this incentive is in place, should the employee leave prior to the end of their 5th year of employment.)
Up Front Sick and Vacation Time
Police Officer Trainee will have 20 hours of sick and 20 hours of vacation time placed in their leave balances upon date of hire.
However, the employee would not accrue additional time until their time at the department equaled the accrual of 20 hours of each, based on their accrual rate. The sick leave hours are not cashable at any point and the vacation hours would not be cashable until such a time as the employee would have accrued the time. There are no expiration dates on either leave type. There is no repayment schedule for this incentive.
Military Incentive
Currently, the Sworn Military Hiring Incentive is $5,000 for those who have served in any branch of the United States Military and received an Honorable or General Discharge as denoted on the DD214. For Police Officer Trainee, $2,500 would be paid upon date of hire, and $2,500 would be paid after completion of the Probationary Period.
