Graffiti Information

Graffiti is a crime that has long-lasting impacts on the community. Beyond the blight, graffiti can quickly attract other graffiti vandals (Taggers), accelerating crime in those areas. A "tag" is any mark of graffiti, from scratch marks to markers and paint.

The time and money involved with clean up are significant for businesses, homeowners, as well as the City of Modesto. With these facts in mind, the City of Modesto has established a variety of resources to help combat graffiti. The success of this program depends on the cooperation between the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, the Neighborhood Preservation Unit, the Police Department, city residents, businesses as well as volunteers. Working together, we can have better, lasting results.

How you can help

  • Keep your eyes open for “taggers” and call the graffiti hotline at 209-342-2259 or fill out the online reporting form.
  • If your private property gets tagged, remove the graffiti as soon as possible. When private property is tagged, the property owner is responsible for removing the graffiti.
  • Check out a graffiti kit to help remove graffiti from public property*. The “Partners in Paint” kit contains solvent used to remove graffiti from metal poles, signs etc. Graffiti kits are available at the Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood’s Department, located at 1010 10th Street, 4th floor. Feel free to come by anytime Monday- Friday between 8:30 am-4:30 pm to checkout a graffiti kit. *Graffiti kits are not available for removal on private property.
  • Paint and paint supplies are also available for you to check out so you can paint over graffiti as you see it. The City of Modesto and Partners in Paint will provide paint in either grey or beige, a paint roller, roller cover, a paint screen and some latex gloves. If you would like to check these supplies out please contact Andy Johnson at ajohnson@modestogov.com
