New Fire Chief
The City of Modesto proudly announces the appointment of Interim Fire Chief Kevin Wise as the new Fire Chief of the Modesto Fire Department. Chief Wise's selection follows a rigorous nationwide search that attracted candidates from across the United States.
"I am pleased to announce Kevin Wise as the City of Modesto's next Fire Chief," says City Manager, Joe Lopez. "Chief Wise has a long tenure of providing strong leadership and a collaborative approach to meeting community needs. He is genuinely committed to service, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the individuals of the fire service, and the communities we serve. I look forward to Chief Wise contributing towards the rich history and traditions of the Modesto Fire Department."
Serving as Interim Fire Chief since August 2023, Chief Wise has demonstrated unwavering dedication to public safety and organizational excellence. His extensive background includes positions such as Deputy Chief of the Fremont Fire Department and Chief of the Ceres Fire Department, showcasing his deep-rooted commitment to the fire service.
"I am deeply honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and look forward to serving our personnel and the community in this capacity," said Chief Wise. "Together, we will continue to uphold the highest standards of firefighting excellence and community service."
About Chief Wise
Chief Wise holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Administration from Cogswell College, a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf College, and has completed prestigious programs such as the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program and California State Fire Marshal Fire Marshal and Chief Officer certifications.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chief Wise is actively engaged in various community and national organizations. He serves on the Paradise School District Board of Directors and is the Vice President of the NorCal Training Officers Association. Chief Wise, a survivor of multiple myeloma and acute myeloid leukemia, channels his experiences into helping others by mentoring recently diagnosed cancer patients for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. He is also a dedicated participant in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Firefighter Stairclimb to raise funds for cancer research.
Looking ahead, Chief Wise's top priorities include expanding the Firefighter/Paramedic program, replacement of Modesto Fire Station 1, and ensuring firefighters have the resources needed to effectively serve our communities.
The Modesto Fire Department remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the lives and property of over 435,000 residents across Modesto, Ceres, Oakdale, Knights Ferry, Valley Home, Riverbank, Empire, Waterford, La Grange, Turlock, and Salida.
